The main method to indicate the level of a student who trains in the martial arts is by means of a colored belt system. However, supplementing the colored belts with an official document such as a certificate is always a good idea. As a school owner, you may get new students who claim that they’re a black belt. They may have the black belt to show you, but in some cases they may have just bought the belt online and started claiming they are an expert martial artist! In this case, black belt certificates with the record of his name, school, sensei and testing date would be more credible.

Keep in mind that blank karate certificates are easy to buy as well. Someone may have made up a school and an instructor, wrote it on the certificate and presented it to you. Be sure to do a follow up check just to be certain that the school and the instructor exist. You can always contact their old dojo just to verify their documentation.
