Degree of Belts for Karate

Just about every martial arts style has its own level system for the purposes of keeping track of the progress of a student. The degree of belts for karate is typically based on a “kyu” system composed of different colored karate belts. There are two levels or each belt, with a low and a high level. The high level has a stripe running along the length of the belt.

A white belt (or none at all) is given to someone who has just started training in karate. With consistent training, students then progress through the level system from low white to high, and then through the colors of the system.

Different degrees of black belts in karate are called “dan” grades. The higher the dan, the higher the rank of the black belt. Stripes or other insignia are added to the belt while the belt remains black.

The colors of the belts in karate are:

  • White
  • Blue
  • Yellow
  • Green
  • Red
  • Brown
  • Black
