Heavy Weight Karate Uniforms

There are essentially two extremes when it comes to karate gi’s: heavy weight karate uniforms and light weight uniforms. When you’re deciding on which karate uniform is right for you, you’ll need to know the benefits of each type of gi.

Heavy Uniforms

Pros

• Thicker fabric
• Typically stronger stitching
• Durable and lasts longer compared to lighter uniforms
• Do not tear as easily because the heavy drill cotton or canvas material is sturdy
• Provides a snapping sound when executing karate moves

Cons

• Since the uniform is heavier, the material is not every breathable. In hot weather, your uniform may become drenched in your own sweat…even before you start class!

Light Weight Uniforms

Pros

• Lighter material makes the uniform more breathable
• Since the material is light, the uniform doesn’t wear you down during your training sessions

Cons

• Less durable fabric is more susceptible to tears
• Snapping sound is not as loud when performing martial arts techniques compared to a heavy karate gi’s
