One of the first things is to determine why you are taking a martial arts class. What are the reasons, what are the benefits you hope to acquire, and where does your motivation come from? Everyone has a different reason for their interest in martial arts. It is important to really know what your goals are and what you hope to achieve so that you may have the best experience possible. Below are some of the more common reasons people have for taking-up martial arts training; as well as styles that fit with the reasons:
Fitness/Recreational Interests

Many people start martial arts training to get in better physical condition. They want to have fun and to experience something new, while getting the added benefit of being able to protect/defend themselves in times of need. Martial arts are a great way to increase endurance, strength, speed, flexibility, coordination, and balance. Martial art training also helps to reduce stress and provide an outlet to relieve tension. The majority of disciplines require physical training, but a fair number of them also test and build your mental capabilities. These disciplines are great to increase your physical attributes:

• Capoeira
• Tae Kwon Do
• Brazilian Ju Jitsu
• Other non-traditional martial arts that require fitness

In the class or practicing at home, you will need quality equipment to enhance your training experience.
