Selecting And Caring For Your Karate Gi
Types of Uniforms in Karate
The karate gi comes in two types: The “Japanese” or “Standard Cut”, and the “Tournament Cut”. The main differences between the two are the sleeves and pants are shorter on the tournament cut karate uniform compared to the standard cut. This is because it is easier to punch and kick with a shorter length uniform.
Selecting the Gi
When you’re selecting a uniform for karate, make sure that it is made with 100% cotton canvas, and not starch. The gi should be heavy, durable, but not rigid. A starched uniform is rigid, making it more difficult to perform karate moves while wearing the gi.
Taking Care of the Uniform
Be sure to pay attention to the labels attached to the gi. Also, be careful when drying your uniform outdoors and exposing the gi to direct sunlight, because some uniforms can change to a light cream color with over exposure.
Just like any martial arts training tool, treat your uniform properly and wash it after training. This is necessary to show respect for the gi, your fellow karate students, as well as sanitation purposes.
