Strength Training and Karate
Effectively performing in karate sparring requires not only knowing the techniques involved, but also being able to execute the maneuvers with power. Strength training and karate training go hand-in-hand in developing these two abilities. Continuous practice of karate training drills will develop your techniques, however, physical attributes such as strength and power can be further enhanced outside of the dojo. Here are a few things you can add to your martial arts training regiment:
Weight Training
Weight training can be performed on exercise machines and free weights such as barbells and dumbbells. For the development of strength, free weights are superior to machines simply because you are required to balance the weight during the exercise. Since karate is dependant on the performance of your muscles, using free weights to build strength is an obvious choice.
Plyometric Training
To build power, plyometric training can be utilized in your martial arts training program. Plyometrics involves explosive movements, and should be used sparingly. Because of its explosive nature, you’ll find that you can generate more force and your karate moves will become much more powerful. Be sure you have proper guidance (you can ask your sensei) before starting a plyometric program.
