The Karate Kid and its impact on the Martial Arts

Released in 1984, the Karate Kid was an instant success. Essentially a younger and karate oriented version of the popular movie “Rocky”, this movie renewed interest in the martial arts, particularly karate for kids.

Unlike most martial arts movies that display cinematic violence, this movie places an emphasis on self discipline. It was traits like this that lead many parents to sign up their children for karate lessons.

Today, martial arts such as karate are an ideal choice for children. Some of its benefits are:

• Many do not realize this, but it is a fact that martial arts training are safer than most school sports.

• Karate, and other martial arts for kids, builds confidence and self-esteem as well as self-discipline, respect, concentration and courtesy.

• Children with special needs, such as ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder), learning difficulties and hyperactivity are often recommended to participate in martial arts because of the clear benefits in its structured training techniques.

• Many schools also offer leadership courses, in conjunction with their karate for kids programs, or similar lessons.

• Martial Arts is ideal for children who do not do well in team sports, giving them the ability to flourish this activity, while combining physical and mental practices.
