White Belts to Black Belts: Mastery of the Fundamentals
Many people approach karate training thinking that as they progress, they’ll learn new and advanced karate techniques. This is true, especially from watching the black belts perform in class; however, you’ll also find that they have mastered the basic karate moves that were taught in the very beginning. And often times, from a competition perspective, it is the basic techniques that are the most effective.
Learning the stance, punches, kicks and defensive moves are essential to learning the more complex techniques. You cannot throw a proper punch or kick without knowing the proper stance, and you cannot execute punch/kick combinations without knowing the basic punching and kicking techniques. Repetitive practice and the mastery of the fundamental techniques are necessary in progressing in your training.
So the next time you find yourself thinking, “When am I going to learn the new techniques?” reassure yourself that the basic techniques you are learning is extremely important, and its mastery is crucial to your progress in your training, especially at the black belt level.
